K&C Associate Presents at DRI Product Liability Conference

On February 8, 2017, Kring & Chung associate Roland J. Amundsen presented at the DRI Product Liability Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mr. Amundsen discussed how Bragg Crane & Rigging received a defense verdict following a three week jury trial. The plaintiff/construction worker was injured when a 108 foot long, 73,000 pound I-beam collapsed while being hoisted into position on a bridge construction project. The plaintiff was awarded $1.65 million against the other defendants in the case. Bragg was able to recover its costs as the prevailing party in the case.

The DRI Conference focused on product liability issues and Mr. Amundsen was assisted in his presentation by Jeff Travis of Exponent, a structural engineer who testified on behalf of Bragg at trial. The trial involved product liability issues as well as many complex and interesting engineering issues to determine who was at fault in the failure of the I-beam during construction. Before the accident, Bragg was engaged only on an hourly basis, with the general contractor taking the lead in the installation of the I-beams. After the accident, Bragg was given responsibility for that task, and the project was completed without further incident.

Mr. Amundsen finds the legal and engineering issues presented by these types of cases fascinating and was grateful the jury agreed with the arguments presented at trial.
