It’s Back! Longest running Triathlon returns to city of Newport Beach

IRVINE, CA – April 17, 2007

Known as the world's longest-running triathlon, the annual Kring & Chung Newport Beach Triathlon will take place on Sunday, April 22, 2007 at the Newport Beach Back Bay Dunes.  The event is back after a one year absence and is on track for Sunday.  The course begins with a ½ mile swim at the Newport Dunes, a 15-mile bike segment (two 7.5 mile loops) on Back Bay and Eastbluff Drives, and a 3-mile run to the finish.

The triathlon’s producer is Pacific Sports LLC. It’s President, Jack Caress, met with city officials to work out a new route for this year. An earlier date than previous years was set so that the triathlon would not conflict with the city’s other planned events.

"We are excited that an event with so much history and prestige is back on the calendar," said Caress.

"The triathlon community in Orange County has shown tremendous support.  We are looking at over 700 triathletes for this first event on the schedule for 2007," said Caress.

Late registration will be available at the jam packed Expo at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Irvine on Saturday, April 21st from 10-4pm. 

Proceeds from the event benefit the University of Irvine’s (UCI) rowing teams. The event is named after its sponsor, a full-service law firm based in Orange County. While this event is not the first swim-cycle-run event ever—it is the longest running triathlon in the world, having kicked off in 1978.
