Kring & Chung Newport Beach Triathlon may not return this year

NEWPORT BEACH, CA – February 28, 2006

It’s supposed to be the year of the 29th Annual Kring & Chung Newport Beach Triathlon, but the city of Newport Beach claims this race negatively affects traffic on race day--and so the longest running triathlon in the country may not take place.

Jack Caress, Director of Pacific Sports LLC, organizing company of the Triathlon, has directed the race since its debut in 1978 and although he has a working traffic plan from previous races in Newport Beach, city officials are demanding new course plans which are expensive. Mr. Caress also says that City officials met with everyone involved in the race last year but neglected to invite representatives from Pacific Sports. Kyle Kring, managing partner of Kring & Chung LLP, sponsoring company of the triathlon for the last 10 years said, “It seems like someone at the city just does not want to do the race.” He agrees with Caress that the city is throwing up intentional obstacles to delay the race.

The triathlon, which began as a local competition has grown to include over 1,000 participants and involves several sponsors and local restaurants. Each year, proceeds of the race benefit the men’s and women’s UCI rowing clubs.

The race is scheduled for May 21, 2006, but Caress says that his group is unable to take registrations right now until this situation with the city is resolved.
