It's Back!...Longest Running Triathlon returns to city of Newport Beach, CA

IRVINE, CA – January 9, 2007

Known as the world's longest-running triathlon, the annual Kring & Chung Newport Beach Triathlon appears to be moving forward with a new route scheduled for Sunday, April 22, 2007. The event was canceled last year by city officials due to a dispute over the event's logistical issues but after hundreds of letters from supporters across the county, the triathlon appears to be on track.

Pacific Sports LLC’s President, Jack Caress and triathlon organizer, has met with city officials for several months, working on a new route that would satisfy the city’s board members including setting an earlier date than previous years so that the triathlon would not conflict with other planned events.

"We sort of took the attitude that if we're going to bring this back, we're going to have to go along with any changes the city sends our way," said Caress.

Officials and race directors will meet Thursday to walk the new course along the Back Bay and Newport Dunes, said Wes Morgan, city recreation and senior services director, indicating further that a final agreement should be ready within 45 days.

"I can honestly say the triathlon community in Orange County came out of the woodwork saying, 'We'd like to see this come back,' and that was really the motivation for pursuing it," said Caress.

Last year, the city was bombarded with over 300 letters in support of the event and Caress and his staff continue to receive about five letters or phone calls daily asking if the race will return. "It's been a difficult process, but at the same time, a lot of people wanted this event to come back," he said.

Proceeds from the event, which attracts about 1,000 competitors and twice as many spectators, benefit the University of Irvine’s (UCI) rowing teams. The event is named after its sponsor, a full-service law firm based in Orange County. While this event is not the first swim-cycle-run event ever—it is the longest running, having kicked off in 1978.
